Have you ever met someone who goes above and beyond to serve others, and you can’t help but remark about them? We recognize that our Texas communities are filled with remarkable individuals, and we want to reward them!
Every month, Daniel Stark partners with local news stations to recognize and reward remarkable individuals and organizations making a difference in their community. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Week, we want to highlight Lana Gore from Mexia, Texas, who spends her Sundays offering support to community members struggling with mental health and trauma.
It started with a simple post on social media. “I put out a Facebook post, and I said, ‘Hey, if anybody would be willing to – would you assist me in starting a support group for people in our area that have trauma, depression, or anxiety,” Lana explained.
She was flooded with feedback from supportive community members and individuals who needed a safe space. This inspired her to create the support group “I Will Sit with You in the Dark.”
“A lot of people don’t want to admit that they’ve got depression, anxiety, or even dealing with traumas from their past, and that comes from the stigma of ‘you should be ashamed for that,’” Lana said, “So, our group really opens up the light to where you don’t have to be ashamed because so many other people are feeling the exact same way.”
Inspired by her efforts to provide a safe haven for members of her community to share their stories without judgment, Daniel Stark awarded Lana with a $500 check through the Be Remarkable program.
The group meets every Sunday at 4 pm in Mexia, Texas, for people struggling with depression, anxiety, and trauma to build connections and feel supported by their community.
