Due to the risk of serious injuries or death, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in conjunction with KidCo, Inc., has issued a voluntary recall of the PeaPod and Peapod Plus Travel Beds. KVUE News reports that approximately 220,000 of the beds were affected by the recall.
The beds consist of a small, pop-up tent that has an inflatable air mattress that can be inserted into a sleeve and zipped into the bottom of the tent floor.
The beds were found to be a defective product though, after the CPSC began to receive numerous reports of children becoming distressed, suffocating, and even dying after rolling off the inflatable air mattress and becoming caught between it and the tent’s walls. In all, the CPSC has received a total of nine reports of adverse events with the tents, including the death of a 5-month old child who died last December after his head became trapped against the wall of the tent as he was sleeping.
The Defective Product was sold from January 2005 until this past month through numerous retailers at a cost of around $100. Parents who have one of the affected units are urged to stop using the product immediately and to contact the manufacturer for a free repair kit.
