Texans are known for their love of motorcycles, boasting one of the largest populations of riders in the nation. Unfortunately, the high volume of bikers combined with lax safety laws means the state also sees one of the highest accident injury and fatality rates as well.
To help address the problem of growing Texas motorcycle accident numbers, motorcycle advocates and law enforcement alike will be promoting bike safety during the Republic of Texas (ROT) Rally taking place this weekend. Reports indicate the ROT Rally will kick off on Friday afternoon in Austin, Texas, and continue into Saturday evening with concerts and all things biker.
KVUE News goes on to add that event organizers—along with state and local law enforcement—will be on hand at the event and suggest taking three steps to staying safe this weekend, which includes:
- Wearing A Helmet- While state law only requires those who are under the age of 21-years-old to wear this piece of safety gear when riding, doing so can significantly reduce the chances of serious injury or death in the event of an accident.
- Don’t Drink and Drive- Alcohol can inhibit one’s ability to safely operate a piece of large machinery like a car or motorcycle—so don’t try it.
- Stay Vigilant- Slowing down, driving in a defensive manner, and looking twice in all directions at stops and intersections will slash the odds of being in a crash.
