Take the case of a woman from Leander, Texas, who remains hospitalized following an infection she developed following a dog bite. Reports indicate the infection has resulted in the woman losing both legs and several fingers to amputations done in an effort to stop the spread of the disease.
According to a story from KHOU News, the woman was bitten on the hand in December of last year by a dog owned by her daughter. Two days later, the victim was hospitalized with a drastic fever and severe vomiting episodes. Within another 72-hours, the woman was on life support after having lost control of her bodily functions.
Doctors were able to later determine the woman had developed an infection from a bacteria commonly found in dog’s saliva. Each year, two to three similar cases are reported across Texas.
